What Is a Roll Cage?
Roll cages exist for one reason: keeping the passenger compartment from collapsing when a car ends up on its roof or takes a hard side impact. That protection also stiffens the chassis as a bonus. Every roll cage ties into specific points on the chassis using tubing sized and positioned to meet a sanctioning body's rulebook. Get those details wrong, and the cage won't do its job.
Before diving into types and construction, it helps to understand exactly what the cage is doing and why racers treat it as non-negotiable safety equipment.
Why Roll Cages Matter
A roll cage's core job is simple: create a survival space around the driver that stays intact even if the rest of the car crumples or rolls. This matters most in a rollover, where the roof and pillars on a stock car can collapse inward. A properly built cage resists that collapse and keeps the driver's space intact.

Most competitive racing classes require a full cage, not just a roll bar, because the added tubing significantly increases occupant protection during a serious impact. The tradeoff is weight and complexity, since a full cage takes considerably longer to design, notch, and weld than a simple roll bar installation.
Types of Roll Cages
Roll cages come in several configurations depending on the racing class and level of protection required. Common configurations include:
- 4-point cage: main hoop plus two rear braces, the minimum for many entry-level classes
- 6-point cage: adds a front hoop, common in road racing and time attack builds
- 8-point cage: adds door bars for side-impact protection in wheel-to-wheel racing
- 10-point-plus cage: full door bars, harness bar, and additional bracing for high-speed or rally use

Do You Need a Roll Cage?
Whether you need a roll cage depends entirely on what you're doing with the car.
Street vs Track Use
- Street driving: Generally doesn't require one, and some argue against installing one for daily use
- Track days and autocross: They almost always require at least a roll bar
- Sanctioned competition: Full cages are mandatory once you cross certain speed or class thresholds
- Regular track time: It's worth considering even outside strict rulebook requirements, since speeds and stakes climb fast on a closed course
If your class rulebook requires a cage, there's no way around building one correctly. Skipping it or building it poorly isn't a risk worth taking for competition or safety. And will end up with a failed tech inspection which means no racing. This may include keeping entry fees. So it would be lost time, money and reputation to not do a good job with you roll cage.
Safety Gear Matters Just as Much
A cage in a street car without matching safety gear, like a proper seat and harness, can actually increase injury risk in a low-speed crash. Safety works as a system, not a single part.
A cage alone doesn't protect you. It has to work together with a proper seat, harness, and padding to actually do its job in a real accident.
Neck injuries and head injuries are most common in these situations. A helmet and neck brace are requirements for this reason. So a cage build without those actually increases your risk of injury. The metal tubes just become things for your head to hit that normally aren't there. And the harness attached to a stiff bar prevents any softening of an impact and leads to whip lash of your neck or worse a broken neck.
Tubing and Fitment
Tubing size and wall thickness both depend on your vehicle's weight class and the specific rules you're building to. Your rule book will have a breakdown ofwhat size tubing for your roll cage is recommended given the size, weight and speed of your vehicle.
Getting clean, tight joints matters as much as picking the right tubing. Using tube coping tools ensures every notch fits snugly before you commit to a weld. Without a proper weld it's not a proper roll cage.
