How to Lay Out Pie Cuts
Clean layout before you cut is what keeps every segment consistent and the finished bend tracking straight. One degree of error compounds across eight joints fast.
- Determine your total bend angle and divide by the number of segments to get the angle per piece. For a 90-degree bend using 6 segments, each cut is 7.5 degrees per side.
- Mark a straight centerline along the length of your pipe on two opposing sides, exactly 180 degrees apart. These are your flip references.
- Set your band saw angle to the cut degree. Lock it down and don't touch it mid-run.
- Mark each cut location along the pipe centerline, spacing them consistently so each segment comes out the same length.
- Keep the short side of each cut at least 1/4 inch. Go thinner and you'll have almost nothing to weld on the inside radius.
- Cut all segments before you start welding. Having the full set lets you dry-fit the bend and check the total angle before committing.

Aband saw jig locks your pipe at the correct angle and holds it there for every cut. That repeatability is the whole game. Without it, you're holding pipe freehand and hoping each cut matches the last one.
Welding:
- Dry-fit all segments before striking an arc. Check the total bend angle and overall alignment.
- Tack weld each joint in at least two spots before running full passes. This keeps the bend from walking as you work around the joint.
- Run full TIG passes on stainless. MIG is acceptable on mild steel but TIG gives cleaner, flatter beads that don't restrict flow inside the pipe.
- On stainless, back-purge every joint with argon. A proper purge keeps the inside of the weld silver to light gold. Black or sugary deposits mean the purge wasn't sufficient and the weld will corrode from the inside out.
- Allow each joint to cool before moving to the next. Heat builds fast across multiple close joints and starts to distort the pipe.
